What Does This Test Check?

These tests measure human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone produced soon after a fertilised egg implants in the womb. A detectable level is what these tests use to confirm pregnancy, often before a missed period shows up on a home urine test.

Two providers offer this check. Medichecks charges £55 for its pregnancy blood test, while Goodbody Clinic charges £79. Both measure the same hormone, so the practical difference is price and provider preference.

A positive hCG result may indicate pregnancy, but the level alone does not reveal how the pregnancy is progressing. Very early results can change quickly, so talk through your result with your GP or midwife and rule out the rare non pregnancy causes of a raised level.
