What Does This Test Check?

This test measures thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies, the immune proteins that attack the thyroid enzyme involved in hormone production. Their presence is the main marker of autoimmune thyroid disease such as Hashimoto's.

Raised antibodies may indicate an autoimmune thyroid process, but many people carry them with a working thyroid and no symptoms, so a positive result is not a diagnosis on its own. Interpret the level next to your actual thyroid hormone results, and take both to your GP.
