What Does This Test Check?

These tests check how well your liver is working using enzymes and proteins such as ALT, AST and bilirubin. The results indicate whether your liver is under strain or showing signs of damage.

Prices range from £39 at Medichecks to £155 for the Bluecrest enhanced liver fibrosis (ELF) check, which looks for deeper liver scarring. YorkTest is £41, Forth and Goodbody Clinic both £49, and the ELF panel sits at the top of the range.

A raised liver enzyme may indicate strain from alcohol, medication, fatty liver or a viral infection, but it does not diagnose a specific disease. Levels can fluctuate and return to normal, so repeat the test and discuss the pattern with your GP.
