What Does This Test Check?

This test measures immunoglobulin E (IgE), the antibody the immune system produces in response to allergens. A raised level often points toward an allergic (atopic) tendency such as hay fever, eczema or food allergy.

A high IgE level may indicate an allergy, but many people with allergies have normal levels and a normal IgE does not rule one out. IgE alone does not say which allergen is responsible, so discuss symptoms and further allergy testing with your GP or an allergist.
