Lipoprotein (a)

What Does This Test Check?

These tests measure lipoprotein (a), a type of cholesterol particle that is largely genetically determined. A high level is an independent risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

Two providers offer this check. Medichecks charges £59 while Bluecrest Wellness charges £109 for the same marker. With the same thing being measured, the difference is price and provider preference.

A high Lp(a) level may increase your heart and stroke risk, but it does not guarantee either event will happen. Unlike many lipids, Lp(a) does not respond much to lifestyle change, so discuss your overall risk with your GP rather than trying to lower it alone.
