What is a clinic blood test?

A clinic blood test is taken in person. You book an appointment slot with the provider, visit a clinic or local health screening event, and a phlebotomist draws blood from a vein in your arm. The sample goes straight to the laboratory, and your results appear in an online portal, often within 24 to 72 hours.

Two styles exist in the UK. Bluecrest runs health MOTs at more than 400 event locations, where a short appointment covers your blood sample plus basic measurements. Randox operates permanent clinics and Medichecks lets you add a clinic draw to many of its tests. The sample quality is the same in both: a full venous draw handled by a professional.

Clinic tests suit anyone who would rather not collect their own sample, anyone needing a larger sample volume for an advanced panel, and people who want same-day certainty that the sample was taken properly. Home kits remain the cheaper and faster option for routine monitoring; compare both in our guide to home blood testing vs clinic vs NHS.

Booking a clinic test

Check the appointment network before you buy. Bluecrest and Randox list their locations on their websites, and for other providers the clinic option appears at checkout. The table above shows every clinic-available test with price, provider, result time, and rating, so you can compare before you commit to an appointment slot.

Clinic test FAQs

Do I need a GP referral for a private clinic blood test?

No. You book directly with the provider online and choose a clinic or event appointment. A phlebotomist takes the sample and results are posted to your online account. You can share them with your GP afterwards.

What happens at the appointment?

A trained phlebotomist takes a venous blood sample from a vein in your arm, which takes a few minutes. Appointments are typically booked in 10 to 15 minute slots. For health MOT providers like Bluecrest, the appointment also covers measurements such as height, weight, and blood pressure depending on the package.

Are clinic blood test results more accurate than home kits?

The laboratory analysis is the same standard either way, and most providers use UKAS-accredited labs. A venous draw gives a larger, more consistent sample than a finger prick, which matters for some advanced panels and can mean fewer repeat tests. For everyday markers like cholesterol, thyroid, or vitamin D, both methods give reliable results. For how we verify lab accreditations and prices, see our methodology page.
