What Does This Test Check?

This test looks for hepatitis B surface antigen, a protein the virus itself produces when an infection is active. A detectable result indicates that you currently carry the hepatitis B virus.

A reactive result may indicate an active hepatitis B infection, which can be acute or long term (chronic). It does not show how much the virus is affecting your liver, so you need confirmatory tests and a GP appointment to plan monitoring or treatment.
